Benfica v Chelsea Betting Preview, UEFA Europa League Final, Wednesday May 15th 2013

Chelsea safely secured their place in the Champions League over the weekend with a 1-2 victory against Aston Villa and can now fully concentrate on adding the Europa League to their trophy cabinet to sit alongside the Champions League which they won last season and with Rafa Benitez looking to move on when the season comes to a close, winning this trophy would certainly only add to the long list of honours he has already achieved on his cv.

Benfica head into this final having last won a major European trophy back in the 1961-62 season when the competion was called the European Cup, now known as the Champions League and with the possibility of winning the Portuguese League Title still up for grabs with one game to play they will certainly being going all out to win this game come wednesday night in Amsterdam.

Benfica v Chelsea Team News

Benfica Team News : Benfica boss Jorge Jesus has no fresh suspensions or injuries to worry about and looks likely to play the same starting eleven that comfortably beat Fenerbahçe in the Semi Final second leg fixture with Oscar Cardozo leading the attack up front.

Chelsea Team News : Demba Ba is cup tied having already been involved in this tournament with Newcastle United so remains unavailable, but the good news for Chelsea fans is that both Eden Hazard and John Terry have made the trip over to Amsterdam and will see how they get on in light training before Rafa Benitez makes a decision as to whether or not they will be involved. Frank Lampard looks likely to lead the side out as Skipper with Fernando Torres leading the attack up front.

Benfica v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics

Wednesday night’s match between the two sides at The Amsterdam Arena will become the third meeting between the two sides, of which Chelsea have won both coming in last years Champions League quarter final play off.

Benfica v Chelsea Recent Form

Benfica : L W W D L
Chelsea : W W W D W

Chelsea have a clear advantage in the recent form stats having won four of their last five matches played in all competition, compared to Benfica who have managed just two victories from their last five played. Chelsea also head into this game unbeaten during those five games, where as Benfica have lost twice.

Benfica v Chelsea Match Betting Odds Market

Benfica have been excellent during this competition since coming in having been eliminated from the Champions League group stage and have lost just the one game, so their price of 3.10 with Betfred will obviously appeal to a few punters no doubt.

The Draw will probably see some takers at a best price of 3.40 with Sky Bet as there is no question that this game will be extremely tight indeed with what’s at stake.

Chelsea certainly have the stronger squad and having a decent record in Europe the online bookmakers have decided to make the London club the clear favourites to win this game at a current best price of 2.50 with Bet365.

Benfica v Chelsea Betting Predictions

A very exciting game in prospect and one that will see Oscar Cardoza for Benfica and Fernando Torres for Chelsea who between them have scored eleven goals during this campaign and both look likely prospects to add to their tally come wednesday night in the Amsterdam Arena.

Benfica suffered elimination from the quarter final stage of the Champions League against Chelsea last season and will look at this Final as a real chance to gain some payback and with it pick up their first major trophy in Europe since 1961 and with a large number of passionate Benfica fans expected in the Amsterdam Arena cheering their side on they certainly have a decent chance of causing a bit of a shock here in my opinion.

Chelsea were involved in a brutal physical match against Aston Villa at the weekend in the English Premiership and both John Terry and Eden Hazard are major doubts having picked up injuries and that could leave Rafa Benitez having to play a lesser strength squad than he would of intended.

Benfica rested a number of their key players in their weekend defeat against arch rivals Porto, but that could of been a very clever move by manager Jorge Jesus as that does really state the intentions of the club from Lisbon that they desperately want to win this competition and with a fresher squad than Chelsea have they will certainly fancy their chances to win this game.

However, Chelsea do have a number of world class individuals in their squad that could walk into pretty much any top european side and having seen their defence of their Champions League Title fade so quickly they will definitely see this final as a real chance to make ammends to their loyal fans and it’s difficult to oppose them.

So the safer option here from a betting point of view does seem to be the goals market as with each club having a player in excellent scoring form during this competition I am expecting at least a couple of goals to be scored the game.
