Manchester United v Chelsea Match Preview

Manchester United will be rock-bottom on confidence heading into this match as they have now gone 7 matches without picking up a single win for the first time since 1992. Louis van Gaal decided to leave out his captain Wayne Rooney in the last match against Stoke but then quickly changed his mind as he was brought on at half-time, United looked much stronger in the second half and therefore Rooney is likely to feature from the start in this match.

Louis van Gaal needs a result in this match or we could see him walk on the Manchester United job. He will be hoping that the fact that this match is against Chelsea will get the players galvanised and up for the fight and also, the home advantage could be crucial for Manchester United as they have been solid at the back at Old Trafford.

In the other dugout is a completely different situation as new manager Guus Hiddink has just entered the scene following the sacking of Jose Mourinho. He has had a decent start to life as Chelsea manager after picking up four points from his opening two fixtures and that could have been six if it wasn’t for a missed penalty.

But this should prove a difficult task for the Chelsea side as they are facing a Manchester United side that have conceded just three goals in eight matches at home this season as well as the fact that they will be up for it in this particular encounter.

Manchester United Latest Team News:

Manchester United will be missing Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo, Antonio Valencia, Luke Shaw and Jesse Lingard for this match through injury but Bastian Schweinsteiger will be available after serving the final match of his three-match ban against Stoke on Saturday.

Chelsea Latest Team News:

Chelsea have just one injury concern at the moment and that lies with Radamel Falcao but unfortunately for new manager Guus Hiddink, Diego Costa picked up his fifth yellow card of the season which means he will miss this fixture. That will most likely mean Loic Remy will start upfront for the Blues unless Eden Hazard is played as a false number nine.

Manchester United v Chelsea Head to Head Statistics

18/04/15 BPL Chelsea v Manchester United 1 : 0
26/10/14 BPL Manchester United v Chelsea 1 : 1
19/01/14 BPL Chelsea v Manchester United 3 : 1
26/08/13 BPL Manchester United v Chelsea 0 : 0
05/05/13 BPL Manchester United v Chelsea 0 : 1

These two premiership giants have met 165 times over the years and Manchester United have been the better side by some distance in those matches with 68 wins to Chelsea’s 47.

And as you would expect, Manchester United have taken advantage when they have hosted the fixture. They have beaten Chelsea in 32 of the 78 meetings at home whilst losing just 20.

Using head to head statistics alone, it would suggest that Manchester United will be victorious come the full time whistle on Monday night.

Manchester United Recent Form

26/12/15 BPL Stoke v Manchester United 2 : 0
19/12/15 BPL Manchester United v Norwich 1 : 2
12/12/15 BPL Bournemouth v Manchester United 2 : 1
08/12/15 CHA Wolfsburg v Manchester United 3 : 2
05/12/15 BPL Manchester United v West Ham 0 : 0

Manchester United are in dire form heading into this match after losing four matches in a row for the first time since 1979 and they have hardly had tough fixtures considering they have played two promoted sides along with West Ham and Stoke City.

Chelsea Recent Form

26/12/15 BPL Chelsea v Watford 2 : 2
19/12/15 BPL Chelsea v Sunderland 3 : 1
14/12/15 BPL Leicester v Chelsea 2 : 1
09/12/15 CHA Chelsea v FC Porto 2 : 0
05/12/15 BPL Chelsea v Bournemouth 0 : 1

Chelsea aren’t in the best form at the moment but they have put in a couple of strong performances since changing manager and they very easily could have beaten Watford on Boxing Day if Oscar had put away his penalty.

Manchester United v Chelsea Average Goals Per Game Statistics

In the 165 matches that have taken place between these two sides, there has been a total of 470 goals meaning that there has been an average goals per game of 2.85.

And in the 78 meetings in which Manchester United have been the home side, there has been 196 goals scored meaning that there has been an average goals per game of 2.51.

Both sets of data suggest that the game on Monday evening will be an entertaining spectacle with at least a couple of goals in the game.

Manchester United v Chelsea Current Betting Odds Market

Manchester United are the favourites to win this game with the online bookmakers and you can obtain a best price of 8/5 with BetVictor – £50 Free Bets for New Customers.

The Draw does look a possibility in this match and I would be tempted to have a bet on it possibly as a cover with best available odds of 23/10 with Bet365 – £200 Matched Bonus Bets for New Customers.

Chelsea are currently the underdogs to win this match which is probably about right given all the statistics above. The best price is 9/5 with Coral – Deposit £5 & Receive £20 Free Bets for New Customers.

Manchester United v Chelsea Free Sports Bets, Tips & Predictions

I think that Manchester United will have to wait to get that desperately needed victory because I think this Chelsea side that is on the mend will take advantage of United’s frailties and I can’t see Chelsea losing this match even though it is at Old Trafford. United are been poor defensively in recent weeks and with a make-shift back line including Blind and Young last time out, I expect the pace of Hazard, Willian and Remy to be too much for the Reds to handle.

It will be disappointing for Guus Hiddink that Diego Costa picked up a one-match suspension because he had arguably just had his best match this season with two smart finishes and he generally looked stronger. But Loic Remy normally does very well when he spearheads the Chelsea attack and I expect him to do so again here and get himself a goal.
